Why Color Matters More on the Coast

Pick a siding color anywhere else in Washington and you're mostly thinking about curb appeal. Pick one in Ferndale, and you're also fighting salt air off the Strait of Georgia, driving rain for most of the year, and a moss season that can run from October through May. The color you choose isn't just cosmetic — it's the first line of defense against fading, chalking, and the streaky, uneven look that shows up on poorly finished siding within a few years. That's a big part of why we install James Hardie exclusively and don't offer LP SmartSide, vinyl, or unfinished wood siding: the finish system matters as much as the board underneath it.

What ColorPlus Actually Is

James Hardie's ColorPlus Technology is a factory-applied finish, not a job-site paint job. The color is baked onto the fiber cement in a controlled environment, in multiple coats, before the boards ever reach a truck. That matters here because Whatcom County's damp, low-light winters are rough conditions to cure a field-applied paint job in. Site-painted siding depends on the weather cooperating and the crew getting mil thickness right on a ladder in the rain — ColorPlus removes that variable entirely.

The practical benefits homeowners notice:

  • More even color — no lap marks, no touch-up mismatches, no thin spots from an uneven field application
  • Better fade resistance — factory finishes are formulated and tested for UV exposure in a way a quick repaint often isn't
  • A finish warranty — ColorPlus carries its own coverage against peeling, cracking, and chipping, separate from the substrate warranty
  • Less upkeep pressure — you're not on a five-to-seven-year repaint cycle just to keep the house looking presentable

Color Families and How to Choose

Hardie's ColorPlus palette runs from crisp whites and warm neutrals to deeper charcoals, greens, and blues. A few things worth thinking through before you pick a chip:

Light vs. Dark

Darker colors absorb more heat and, over time, can show dust and pollen streaking a bit more visibly than lighter tones — though this is a minor cosmetic factor, not a durability issue with ColorPlus. In a marine climate like Ferndale's, mid-tone and darker colors also tend to hide moss and algae staining better than stark white, which shows green streaking faster under our tree cover and humidity.

Trim Contrast

Most homes in the area pair a body color with a contrasting trim board and a third accent color for the front door or shutters. Hardie's trim boards and fascia come in matching ColorPlus finishes, so the whole exterior — lap siding, trim, soffit where applicable — reads as one coordinated system rather than a patchwork of separately sourced materials.

HOA and Neighborhood Fit

If you're in a covenant-controlled neighborhood, check your HOA's approved palette before ordering. Hardie's color range is broad enough that most HOA restrictions can be matched without much compromise.

Primed vs. ColorPlus

Hardie also sells a primed-only option meant for field painting. We don't push customers toward that route as a default. Once you factory-finish, you're paying for the paint job once and it's engineered to last; with primed boards, you're committing to a full paint cycle almost immediately and then again on a recurring schedule — and in this climate, that cycle tends to arrive sooner than homeowners expect. For most Ferndale homeowners, the math favors ColorPlus.

How the Climate Factors In

Three things do most of the damage to siding finishes here:

  1. Salt-laden air pulled in off the water, which accelerates finish breakdown on lower-grade coatings
  2. Sustained rain exposure, which tests how well a finish sheds water versus absorbing it at the surface
  3. Moss and algae growth in shaded, north-facing, and tree-covered lots, which shows up faster on porous or poorly sealed surfaces

This is also why product choice, not just color, matters so much locally. It's a big part of why we don't install LP SmartSide, vinyl, or bare wood siding — each has its own trade-offs with moisture, maintenance, or long-term appearance in exactly these conditions. Hardie's fiber cement is non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and engineered with HZ5 formulations built for wetter, harsher climates — paired with a factory finish, it's the combination we've standardized on.

Care and Realistic Expectations

ColorPlus isn't maintenance-free — nothing exposed to Whatcom County weather is. Plan on:

  • An annual rinse-down to clear pollen, salt residue, and moss spores before they take hold
  • Prompt caulk inspection at trim joints and penetrations, since caulk failure (not the siding itself) is the most common cause of moisture problems
  • Keeping gutters clear so runoff doesn't sheet down the face of the siding and streak it

Done right, a ColorPlus finish holds its color and resists cracking for well beyond what a field-painted product typically manages before it needs attention again.

Warranty Structure

James Hardie backs the substrate with a long-term limited warranty and backs the ColorPlus finish separately for finish-specific issues like peeling and fading. Ask your installer to walk through both documents — the terms differ, and a correct installation (proper fastening, clearances, and flashing) is what keeps either warranty valid. That's also why installation quality matters as much as the product itself.
